The worlds largest saltwater crocodiles are found in India. credit: wildlife directorate, Government of Orissa, India.zoan Bugula neritina.

BHITARKANIKA, India — The Bhitarkanika Park on the Orissa coast has achieved the rare distinction of housing the worlds largest salt water crocodile measuring about 23 feet.

What has delighted the wildlife lovers and wildlife officials in the state is that the largest crocodile of Bhitarkanika has again found a place in the 2006 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Orissa chief wildlife warden S C Mohanty confirmed that the creeks inside the park are home to some of the world`s largest salt water crocodiles.

During 1994 also, the Guinness book of world record had maintained that Bhitarkanika has the largest living crocodile in the world.

The latest census carried out by the wildlife division indicated that the Bhitarkanika sanctuary has a total strength of 1462 crocodiles which included 203 adults.

According to crocodile experts and senior research officer in the wildlife division Sudhakar Kar, nearly eight salt water crocodiles in Bhitarkanika have the length of 16 to 18 feet while five were reportedly having a length of 18 to 20 feet and three crocodiles measured above 20 feet.

Bhitarkanika has also emerged as the ideal habitat for the salt water crocodile in the country and also the largest concentration. Though Sundarbans sanctuary has a good mangrove forest, yet it houses a very small population of the salt water crocodiles. So is the case of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Dr Kar said that the Dangmal Interpretation Centre located inside the Bhitarkanika Park has preserved the full skeleton of a 19 feet 8 inch long crocodile found dead last year.

The crocodile was initially cremated but later the wildlife officials retrieved the skeleton and decided to preserve it to make the people aware that the park is home to some of the largest salt water crocodiles of the world.

Wildlife experts, however, argued that the largest crocodile so far found in the Bhitarkanika was almost 25-foot-long which could be traced from the skull preserved by the Kanika Royal Family.

The crocodile, probably was shot dead near Dhamara during 1926 and later its skull was preserved by the then Kanika King. The crocodile experts said as per the parameters, the crocodile would be about 25 feet since the size of the skull was measured one seventh of the total length of the body.

The Bombay Natural History Society (BHNS) and the Orissa Wildlife Division have approached the Kanika Royal Family to hand over the skull of the largest crocodile for preservation but in vain. The Royal Family in possession of the skull of the largest crocodile in the world, refused to part it.

Wildlife experts said besides the largest living crocodile, the Bhitarkanika has another distinction of having rare and endangered white crocodiles numbering about ten in the wild. This apart, the Dangmal Crocodile Research Centre also has a rare white crocodil named Gori in captivity for over last two decades.

Is it possible that the crocodile that was caught and said to be the largest in the world, is not????? I mean who knows how large these reptiles can achieve to be…..

comment 1- Dr.Hay Canada Jan 5, 2007 @ 8:52am

The crocodile is really left over from the dinosaur age, the longer one goes back in time the larger the crocs were, the largest one killed in Australia measured 28 feet 4 inches and was 13 feet around the gut. Shot and killed in 1957 by a woman on the banks of the Norman River Normanton North West Queensland Australia… Normanton still has plenty of crocodiles in the wild, but gone are the dinosaurs.

comment 3- dr daniel dale oxford England Feb 15, 2007 @ 10:59am

That cant be the largest crocodile because Steve Irwin found one measuring around 30ft so update your record book.

comment 4- Bobby Furgerson Palmetto,Unitied States May 2, 2007 @ 3:05pm

im not sure about 30ft mate, only because i litteraly just watched one of his latest crodile hunter episodes, the one where hes searching for the supercroc an he said himself that the biggest he had ever caught was 16ft but they caught the supercroc which was 17ft. that doesnt mean there isnt a 30ft croc though, im pretty sure one was found in a lake in the U.S, dunno if it was 30ft though:):)

I would love to know just how big the worlds biggest crocodile really is. The ones were talking about are huge and Id love to see one up close to really get the feel for it. Ive seen crocs on t.v. grab very large animals with their mouths and drag them right into the water. Crazy! Id love to see a 30 ft, several thousand pound crocodile. Wish I could see one.

How about Gustave? Isnt he a really big croc?

comment 7- Dawn Geneseo,Illinois Jun 19, 2007 @ 10:04pm

in order for a croc to be around 30 ft it would have to have a large environment with lots of food and no dangers to its environment or to itself and would have to live for around 60 years and to see a big one like 30-40 feet from a pro,s mouth it would have to live for about 100 years in our day and time.

comment 8- brian missouri,usa Jun 21, 2007 @ 5:59am

supposably gustave the man killer of Africa was supposed to be 25 to 30 feet long wich could be possible for its diet and age.

comment 9- brian missouri,usa Jun 21, 2007 @ 6:15am

a croc can grow as long as 40 feet in our time but is extremly rare for a croc to reech just 30 feet now adays it is probably around 100 years old and if it is younger that means it has had extremly good habitat and dietary issues.

comment 10- brian missouri,usa Jun 21, 2007 @ 6:52am

Gustave is real, but how do they know its just one croc that killed all those people. I think it was more than one. People just made it into a one croc story so its more dramatic and exciting. Yes there are bigger croc than the one they have in the Guiness Book. But until its caught and recorded in the proper manner, it will all just be hear say. Thus far this is the largest croc recorded in the proper manner. Live with it people

There are about 4-5 known crocs in the world that are 20 feet or bigger. Gustave in Africa, 20 feet, over 2000lbs., Utan, Myrtle Beach, 20 feet over 2000lbs., Crocosaurus in Parrot Island, Orlando, 20 feet over 2000lbs. and Yai, 20 feet, 2500lbs. The crocodile in Orissa, India crocodile farm that is supposedly 23 feet long, I will not consider it as legit unless someone builds up a website with information, shows a picture of this animal or puts it on Youtube in action.

Officially Gustave is the largest croc still alive and still growing. Weighing more than 2-3 tons and and longer than 30 feet. Estimate puts him at around 50 years old, but from the teeth size scale plates and condition the beast could well be up to 65 years old. Update your records. C.I.A.

Howdy Yall im a part of the organization called United Crocs of America. Last week in our seminar our teacher Mr. Croc-Dillian had a seminar for all under grads including myself. In this Seminar Mr. Dillian brought out a Super Croc, which is said to be extinct. This bad boy was 58 feet long and weighed 10,000. It broke free but luckily i was able to wrangle it. I can tell you all that supercrocs are still out, I see them all the time. A 50 foot croc isnt a show for me to see anymore its the 60 and 70n footers that i get the camera out for. This is justin from United Crocs of America and any of you who can pass the entry exam on our official website i urge you to do it and stand by me as we make history.

I had seen an article a few years back about an alligator or crocodile that was killing livestock in Africa or some other country. They staked out a horse to lure him and he came out. They caught him and moved him in a cattle truck which he was hanging out of. I think it was his front left leg that was missing. They figured he was close to 100 years old and probably 3000 lbs. I cut the article out of some paper and havent seen it since. But the thing was they didnt kill it but moved him to a different area.

Nonsense-Apparently,the Indian 23 footer is for real, according to Wildlife officials at the reserve at Orissa. The biggest in aussie, was about 20 foot. But,according to the research Ive done on this topic,in 1957,in Normanton,Northern Queensland,a Polish school teacher shot dead one that was 28 feet long.Almost unbelievable, except it was authenticated by a number of people, one being a ranger who saw the carcass going out in the tide. There is an old crocodile hunting book in the Sutherland Library, near where I live that has quite a long interview with the lady that shot it,and her husband who was there as well.I read, in years later, that she really regretted killing it.There has never been anything close to it here, apart from the monsters mentioned by Ion Iodress,in his book,In crocodile land, where he mentions the sizes of one that he claims was over 30 feet long,WITH a bit of its tail cut off. Anyone can check up on any of this info if they want to dig deep enough.Too much garbage has been written about how big they do get.Anything bigger than 18 feet is extremely rare.BUT,there could be some monsters in some of the inhospitable creeks in Northern Australia that are almost impossible to get to.I for one, hope there is,and I hope no idiots looking for animal trophies find them.

comment 48- Darren Australia Jun 9, 2008 @ 4:09am

I also am interested in large crocs but some of you people really need to get a grip, where is all the photographic evidence of these big crocs? a croc shooter in new guinea and australia(Tom Cole) for 20 years in the 1930-40s said he shot thousands of crocs and never saw one bigger than 18feet, dont ya think if they were around like you all say this guy would have seen them, a search on the net about the 28ft croc shot at Normanton reveals no photos, no evidence of a reputable nature at all, as we say here it all sounds like a croc of s___t.

comment 49- Michael Brisbane, Australia Jun 9, 2008 @ 4:45am

Its worth taking into consideration that people didnt possess camera phones,or carry a portable camera around with them everywhere they went back in the 1950s,and earlier,in Australia,or the late 1970s, I went to Green Island,Queensland,Australia. There were at the time two monster crocodiles captive there. One of which was almost 18 feet long,if I remember correctly.I remember thinking at the time that a crocodile 10 feet bigger than these would be dinosaur like in appearance, because these two were so big that they almost looked fake. And they were pitch black in colour,杭州夜生活 which Im told means that they spent a lot of time in fresh water. I understand people doubting the 28 foot crocodiles authenticity.BUT,the book I read had a whole chapter on the woman that shot it,and although I cant quote anyone the entire chapter,I remember that she said that its eyes were the size of ripe grapefruits, and that they cut its head off but it was so big that they couldnt lift it into the boat. She said that when shot,it didnt move-it was dead with one shot. When they first saw it,they said it looked like a fallen tree trunk on the mudbank where it lay. This week I am going to Sutherland Library, and to get the name of the books title, so others can look it up and weigh up its truthfulness. In the other book I mentioned,In Crocodile Land, the author mentions a few crocodiles that he saw that were bigger than the Normanton 28 footer.

comment 50- Darren Australia Jun 9, 2008 @ 7:26pm

Ive just found the book,it is called,Australia Story-Crocodiles,By Philip Holden. The chapter called ,A question of size is the focal point of what we are talking about here. The eyes of the 28 foot croc. were in fact the size of an orange, not a grape fruit. And it seems photographic evidence of this massive croc. existed until 1968.The woman who killed the croc, died in 2006. If her husband, Ron,i s still alive, Im going to find out this week. The question for me is; what happened to the photos? From this book it would seem that crocodiles arent found as big as they were many years ago, because they were nearly made extinct by over shooting and most of the, at the time, big ones, were wiped out before they could reach the over 20 foot length.

comment 51- Darren Australia Jun 11, 2008 @ 3:04am

Darren, well researched. However you may have better luck tracking down their son, George. Nonetheless it is worth considering that the Normanton animal is not an authenticated size. For authenticity a total body length should be recorded as should other standard body measurements such as snout vent, head leangth, eye snout, maximum head width and cranial width, and no details of such a record exist. I also think you will find that the Green Island captives are around 16-17 feet. There is anecdotal evidence of 18 foot + animals in QLD and NT but these animals are quite secretive and no funds have ever been dedicated to their capture simply for the purposes of putting a tape measure over them. There is an anecdotal report of an animal that frequents Crab island off NW QLD that has been scaled by a fisheries spotter plane to be near the 20foot mark and locally known as Jurrasic. I would suggest that 20 foot animal in Aust is not beyond reasonable suggestion but just yet to be caught and authenticated.

comment 52- Sarah Australia Jun 27, 2008 @ 10:37pm

My mother shot this croc in 1957. All the locals knew about this huge animal for years. She regretted this act after the fact but if it hadnt been her someone else would have. Both Mum and Dad successful fought for the protection of crocodiles in later years and started the first croc farm in Australia. In 1957 there was only one wall mounted phone in Karumba at the Pilot Station. Half the time this didnt work so communication was difficult. The Dept. of Harbours and Marines River pilot , Jock Charles and the Captain of the Cargo boat -Malalouka (think thats how it was spelt) saw the dead animal on the river bank and measured it.This was backed up and confirmed by Paddles Taylor who was skipper of the CSIRO vessel doing the initial prawn survey in the Gulf. This information from both Government people was sent to the Guiness Book of Records and accepted and published in the 1078 edition. Dad has a copy but I am sure some Libraries would still have copies. I agree the model in Normanton is just that– a model. Not in the actual proportions But impressive. The one at Hartleys Crocodile Adventures is a smaller(shorter) version but more in proportion to what a real one would look like. As the years go by the stories get bigger and more bizzare– depending on which tour guide or journalist you listen to. My mother was the stuff that made the pioneers and legends of the North. A quiet gentle hardworking lady who didnt care to boast about what she did

comment 53- George Pawlowski Cairns Australia Jun 28, 2008 @ 8:41pm

Thank you for replying-for a while I didnt think anyone was interested. The question I pose for you George,is what did happen to the photos-if they existed-because they are now worth their weight in gold,so to speak. It seems that there is a certain amount of doubt over the Normanton crocodiles size amongst old time hunters and croc. experts.I however, think that it is for real however.George, could you give us more information on this monster,if you have it? Apparently, there was a very large crocodile called the Hippo in the top end and it was captured alive, but, according to George Craig it didnt measure 20 feet-after it was RUMOURED to be well over that figure by those who had seen it from the bank. The book I mentioned in my previous comments, has stories from the Philipines of some huge crocodiles.Whether they are true or not, I can not ascertain. What is clear though,is that there were definetly more bigger crocodiles around years ago.Who knows what lerks up some of those impenetrable creeks in Northern Australia and New Guinea. How much would it cost to catch and measure this Jurassic monster,Sarah? How thick was the girth of the Nomanton crocodile George?

comment 54- Darren Australia Jul 10, 2008 @ 2:33pm

i dont belive in no 28foot croc but 18-20 ft. i believe. Most of all your stories are different there is logic in most of all of your stories however id need to see proof of a 28 footer.

Read about this Orissa croc quite a bit now. Gonna make the trip there soon to find out fer real. See, my bro got these Oriyas (natives of Orissa) working for him at Cafe Coffee Day here in Goa and theyve proudly boasted of a very giant crocodile living in that park. They also mentioned stuff about other giants but always ended up with this particular one. From what can be understood, the protection of crocs in Orissa since the seventies suggest that some crocs have managed to attain these great sizes. I believe the government feels so strongly for the animal, their extremely possesive and secretive about it due to the interests from international buyers. Ive never though doubted though that there are a few giants living in Australia and Africa. They get that big for being clever….i.e avoiding humans. When I get pics, Ill post or mail them to all interested.

comment 56- A.X.L Goa, India Jul 13, 2008 @ 5:44am

Gustave is possible between 20 and 22 feet, maybe slightly larger. There is no doubt that he is a true giant. Might weigh in excess of a ton considering the doucumentary on NGC and the comparison he makes near one hippo. NOt sure about these 30 foot croc stories, they might have lived but would have defintely been concrete evidence. And about the Normanton croc, there was a pic I found in 2002 with Mrs Powlowski holding a skull of the animal, had almost all its teeth but looks to be from a 18 or 19 footer.Almost anywhere u look up the size saltwater crocs, it say a maximum of 23 feet maybe attained. It can be accepted that crocs with helluva girth may look longer and bigger than than really are. Some of the Grumeti crocs especially on the NGC documentaries look like their over 20 feet yet their most likely a bit less but make up for it sheer girth. Anxious to confirm this 23 foot croc in Orissa. Will update when I find out more.

comment 57- A.X.L Goa, India Jul 13, 2008 @ 6:36am

There is so much controversy about this Normanton crocodile, world wide, that if we can, lets see if we can sort it out, once and for all.No more fairy tales and half truths. If you have concrete evidence-photos,or otherwise-lets see it.George,if you read this, present what you can,PLEASE!!!-because,I think your claims are truthful…A.X.L,I share your views that the crocodiles girths make them look deceptively bigger than their actual length measurements. The monsters on Green Island,Cairns, are that thick ,that they look 20 feet long, easy.Yet they are less than 18 feet long. There have been claims-unproven-that there are still 20 foot plus crocodiles in the Daly River,NT,Ord River,WA,and Mitchell River QLD. What we need is PROOF!Whos got it?

comment 58- Darren Australia Jul 14, 2008 @ 5:21am

MAn Im so annoyed I cant find that pic but I remeber having it in 2002 of the Normanton croc, lady holding the skull. I dont disbelieve that it was a giant but that skull could have no way come from an animal 28 feet long. Like u said Darren, pics of something like that would be worth gold. By the way, have u seen the pic of Rom Whitaker and that skull from Orissa? They say it could have come from a 25 foot croc. HArd to tell but it is huge one. I can send it to you by e-mail. Ive done alot of looking up on Aussie crocs, they say there is a giant named Apollo who approaches 7 meters, rivers famous for its jumping crocs. I dont quite get how the wildlife officials in Orissa may have measured this giant, Im guessing they measure the bank it was just on to estimate length. My bro told me they use a laser of some sort. Yeah it all comes down to the proof, seeing it for yourself. That Bhitarkanika place is tough man, the heat is terrible, the park itself has some seriously inhospitable environments and I aint talking about the people. Sooner or later Im gonna make the trip there with loads of money and find out for myself. Will keep you posted Darren.
